The Giants and Jets have postponed their preseason game from Saturday to Monday because of the threat of Hurricane Irene.

Hurricane Irene was on track to reach the New York area by Sunday. New York planned to shut down the entire mass transit system by noon Saturday.

The NFL is donating $1 million to the new Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on Washington’s National Mall. The contribution from the league and NFL Charities will help the foundation behind the memorial reach its goal of raising $120 million.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement: “We in the NFL believe that professional football is the ultimate meritocracy. NFL players are measured strictly by their performance on the field regardless of race, religion or economic background.”

Troubled Brittish signing sensation Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London flat around 4pm local time.

Her death is thus far reported as ‘unexplained’ however Sky News reports suggest her death was caused by a drug overdose.
