Rapper Cassidy was arrested in Hackensack, N.J. and was facing murder charges over the weekend, but today comes news that the allegations are false.

According to XXLMag.com, who spoke with a representative for the Philadelphia Police Department, the rapper was busted solely on probation violation charges, and is not a suspect in a murder.

"In reference to the recent inquires regarding Barry Reese [Cassidy], on Saturday, May 14, 2011, Reese was arrested by Hackensack Police for a probation violation for a previous aggravated assault incident in Philadelphia,"

the PPD public affairs office said in a statement to the website. "Reese was placed in probation violation status for non-reporting only.

Reese is currently being held in Bergen County Prison awaiting extradition to Philadelphia. Reese is not wanted for any other crime / violation in Philadelphia."

Philadelphia Police originally told authorities in New Jersey, where Cassidy lives, to consider the rapper "armed and dangerous."

After leaving his house on Saturday (May 14) afternoon, the rapper was tailed by police until he was finally apprehended. Lt. Timothy Lloyd noted that the 'I'm a Hustla' MC was "surprised" by the bust. This latest arrest isn't the 28-year-old's first run-in with the law.

In 2005, he was sentenced to 11-to-23 months in prison for a first-degree murder charge, which was later downgraded to involuntary manslaughter, for the shooting death of 22-year-old Desmond Hawkins.

Cassidy and his three friends were arguing with Hawkins and his friends when the verbal altercation became violent and the victim was shot in the back.

The judge in the case credited the rapper for seven months time served. He was released from prison in March of 2006, after serving eight months.
