K.Y.D. Works - HipHop.org Interview His name is K.Y.D WORKS. Born in the Bronx, NY. The hospital to be exact, Our Lady Of Mercy. K.Y.D.'s front door got hit with a shot when he was 5, so at 6 his Grandmother decided it was time for a move. Westchester County was the next place.
He started with poetry in 5th grade and at 14, spit his first rhyme. "I am my music and my music is me" says Works. "I have until June 16th to introduce myself to the world. I feel I can shape the world and I know music is my tool to do so. I wanna invite this world to my universe. I am K.Y.D WORKS." Now its time to pick his brain a little bit.
Alot of people might not know .. but since your last interview with HipHopLead.com ... you became incarcerated. Lets get down to the nitty gritty .. how long are you locked up for and what happened? Three and a half flat. They say sometimes art imitates life. Not with me, life influences art. To keep it short, I was living a life of crime and trying to get everything fast and easy.
You have been making a stronger net presence on Unsigned On The Grind and Digital Dynasty mixtape series. How is that possible being you are locked up? I knew that my time was coming, so I was in the booth heavy. Now that I'm gone I'm just putting it out bit by bit.
How many recordings did you record before you were sent away? Over 60!
Do you think being out of the music scene for so long will make it harder for you to get farther in the music bizz? Or do you think it will gain you that street cred and recognition some people seek in this genre? Not at all. I don't want cred. for getting caught or recognition for crimes committed.. I was once told that I was ahead of my time. When I come home, it will be my time. But to answer the question, it might gain me some cred and cause a few stares. That's HIPHOP!
What was a typical day like for K.Y.D. Works before he was locked up? (Laughs) What's typical? My days vary. I always started off with a heavy breakfast of "WEEDies", figure my next move money wise, throw on instrumentals and get going. Write when a rhyme strikes and find time to record.
What is it like now? (Laughs) 6:30 wake up on the count, 7:30 chow, 8:30 in the gym or yard, 11:30 chow. Still write when a rhyme strikes. Hit the phone for a while, 4:30 chow, read and 11:00 lights out. That's over until 1/14/2011, I just got hit with 120 days in the SHU (Special Holding Unit) for those that don't know ... The BOX.
Who were your influences to get into music? 2pac Shakur, B.I.G., Black Star, Nas, AZ, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Earth Wind and Fire. The list goes on, they all influenced me to want to convey my views to a beat.
Are you impressed with the response you have received from your presence on Digital Dynasty and Unsigned On The Grind? Most defintley. I used to think I might be limited to listeners when I first started, but the internet is a beast with a grip on the world. D.D. and Unsigned have listeners worldwide, so I now have listeners , world wide.
Are you going to release an album or a mixtape while you are locked up? Album no time soon, mixtapes are in the making as we speak.
Name 1 song you've done that will have the HipHop.Org viewers hooked!? "The Ultimate"
