Don Trip is starting to make a serious buzz and some people in the music business are starting to listen. By 2011, everyone will hear Don Trip and the story he has to tell. TheSource.com spoke to Don Trip recently in regards to his career, his passion, and what to look for next year.

When and why did you decide to start rapping?

I started rapping at 11 and I started to get serious with my craft at the age of 16 with recording. I’m 25 now so I’ve been doing this for a while. Rapping is just a great way to get my feelings out and release what’s building inside me. However I’m feeling is how I rap on the mic, but I also have a serious passion and love for music in general which helps add on to what I’m doing in the studio.
Explain your upbringing? Where you are from? Does it influence your music?

I had a pretty average upbringing as any child would have growing up in a middle class family. I was born and raised in East Memphis, Tennessee, one of 3 children, and was raised by a single parent, my mom. She worked most of the time; her salary was enough so we didn’t have to receive government assistance but we also barely got by bruh.

Rapping is starting to get you some attention? Any labels looking at your talent?

I’m actually talking to a couple of labels and got a couple of offers. Cool –N- Dre is interested so I’m going see what’s up with that situation. Things are going good, can’t complain, I’m just continuing to negotiate.

Describe your style of rapping?

Today, being original is probably the most important factor in being successful? Where do you see yourself in regards to that matter? The game has actually turned in my favor as of right now. Honesty is what’s missing from a lot of people’s music nowadays. I’ve been me FOREVER and that’s who I will continue to be in my music. Any fan I gain will be a loyal fan because they will like me for me.

I see from listening to “Letter 2 My Son”, you’re not afraid to rap about what’s emotionally touching you. Where does that come from?

I feel like in this music business you seriously have one shot to show the world who you are as a man. People need to know what your story is and how they can define you.

What are the comparisons you usually hear?

I’ve heard Wayne and a lot of other rappers which has lead me to not even listen to people’s music no more. People are going to sound like each other period especially if they are from the same region. I feel like if I don’t hear you now, I cant sound like you, you may compare me to him or whomever but I can’t see it and I don’t want to hear it.

So with that being said, who’s in your ipod now?

I purposely don’t listen to other rappers because I’ am creating my own lane. Once I heard about the comparisons, I cut myself off from all rap music so I can concentrate on my craft. If I make a career sounding like another man then I don’t deserve the full credit when it’s all said and done.

What’s missing in the game right now? Honesty, the game fell off when rappers didn’t realize music raises children. This music thing is far more important to me than just music. I understand that one day I’m going to be broke, one day I’m going to be rich, sad, happy, mad, all of that. There are many different dimensions to a man so no disrespect to them but for example; Big Tymers only rap about balling and shinning and somebody like Public Enemy only rap about politics and revolution, that limits their music. The last person to really showcase what he might have been feeling while he was recording that specific music at that specific time is 2pac.

What are you expecting in 2011? Man, everything! I’m seriously trying to be all over the place. Every penny they got for me I want. I want to be in the credits for everything!

What’s one thing you want for the holidays? I just want to see my son, bruh. -
